Women with dense breasts face more difficulty in cancer detection
The New England Journal of Medicine recently released a study that concluded that women with dense breasts face more difficulty in breast cancer detection but also have a three times greater risk of cancer. After age, breast density is probably the most important factor. If a female of screening age wants to find out if she has dense breasts, a radiologist is the best person to measure breast density. It is not something that a woman can judge for herself; however, this risk factor might be largely inherited.
Mayo Clinic studies reveal high sensitivity for small lesions
An ongoing study at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN found a sensitivity of over 90% for lesions less than 20 mm, 88% for lesions less than 10 mm and 75% for lesions less than 5 mm. This study demonstrated lesions as small as 3.3 mm. This patient population included women who were positive on mammogram. In a second study at Mayo in asymptomatic women with dense breasts and at high risk of breast cancer, preliminary results indicate that MBI may be able to detect significantly more tumors than screening mammography.

is a cost-effective alternative to
breast MRI for finding lesions in dense breast

Gamma Medica-Ideas’ Lumagem® system features fully solid state digital detection utilizing eV PRODUCTS™ cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) to provide superior resolution compared with the conventional scintillation camera technology traditionally used in gamma cameras. Our Lumagem is available as a single or dual-head system. Single head systems can be upgraded to dual-head for higher throughput and increased sensitivity. Lumagem also allows minimal dead space at the edges of the image, permitting the closest access to the chest wall. Lumagem provides unparalleled resolution with our 1.6 mm intrinsic resolution as well as 4.5% energy resolution, the best in the industry, providing significantly improved scatter rejection. Lumagem features a gantry that is very versatile in positioning the patient, with a full range of motion. Gamma Medica-Ideas’ unique patented mounting mechanism, allowing the use of light breast compression, ensures that the radiologist can obtain images using any standard mammography view. Lumagem can thus be used by any trained mammographer.

Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI) with Lumagem is the latest and most cost-effective tool in your arsenal of adjunctive imaging for breast cancer diagnosis.
